Awareness of hair loss problems in men is as high as it can get, indeed, there are commercials all over the place. Then there is the commercial about an aerosol baldness cover-up. No rocket science involved to easily see that it’s all about hair loss suffered by men. This is a problem because women suffer from hair loss too. In fact, women’s hair loss happens more frequently than men’s hair loss and there are more causes for it too. We’ll cover just some of the primary reasons for women’s hair loss.
There are certain medications that affect whether or not a woman gets to keep her hair. Many people already are aware that chemotherapy spells hair loss in women. Other medical treatments include certain types of medication that simply causes it due to chemical interaction with a woman’s body. Sometimes the hair does not actually fall out. It’s not actual hair loss, but rather it’s an interruption with new hair growth. In such conditions of interactivity, eventually she will appear to be balding or hair is falling out, but that’s not the case. So it will be very difficult to tell the difference if you don’t know.
Believe it or not, pregnancy can have quite a large effect on a woman’s hair. The change is different for women, for some there’s an increase in the rate of growth, and for others there’s some loss of hair. This is quite common after the baby is born when all of the extra hair that grew in while the woman was pregnant starts to be shed.
Obviously, mothers experiencing pregnancy for the first time may be a bit alarmed with this. Once, however, all the body chemicals/hormones balance-out and are normal, then they’ll see their hair condition return to its former state. So just don’t get stressed about it because it’s all normal and not permanent.
There’s a cyclic pattern with hair growth. The average lifespan of a single strand of hair is a few years. There will be growth of roughly a half inch/month, and then in roughly six years it will be shed.
However, for some women, there is an interruption of that cycle, and it’s caused for genetic reasons. There are no known genetic engineering based treatments for that condition. But there is good news about this because it is not permanent in the sense that the cessation is permanent, the frequency of occurence is random and doesn’t last forever. Sure, of course it’s a source of embarrassment, but you can find support and means to effectively handle it.
Men’s hair loss is much more widely discussed than women’s hair loss. So who really knows why this is the case, we don’t know. So, if a woman finds that her scalp is getting thin or that she is losing her hair, she is more likely to be embarrassed about it than she is to seek help. Thankfully this is changing. In time and with research, women’s hair loss will be understood better.
